The PEACE Fund Makes Its First Donation to Tameer-e-Millat

Published on August 16th, 2006

In late March 2006 the Peace fund took the decision to have due diligence carried out on Tameer-e-Millat. These checks are a time-consuming - but very necessary - process in order to ensure that donor funds are spent responsibly. Now finally in August we are pleased to announce that the PEACE Fund has sent its first donation of $10,000 to the Tameer-e-Millat Foundation.

To date we have been able to focus our donations to "protect and aid" children with our support of the Thai tsunami victims and our recipients from the Children's Organ Transplant Association. Our latest donation will be used to "educate" thousands of children living in Pakistan.

With the support of this $10,000 donation from The PEACE Fund, the Tameer-e-Millat Foundation will work with famous authors of children's literature and the Ministry of Education to create stories that help thousands of Pakistani children with their literacy skills while educating them about nature conservation, tolerance, peace, social equity, and human rights. As many as 50 percent of Pakistani children - mostly girls from rural areas - drop out of school before completing their primary education. With so few children finishing, fewer than 20 percent can use numbers effectively and fewer than 10 percent are truly literate. However, storytelling, a timeless form of entertainment and education, provides new opportunities for children in Pakistan to receive informal education.

The stories will be read in Urdu and recorded in a high-quality format to be used in storytelling programs across the country. In an attempt to eradicate illiteracy the stories will not only be broadcast to approximately 1,500 children in 45 schools but, in order that all children have access to this important educational tool, they will also be aired each week on radio stations nationwide.

It is widely acknowledged that the best weapon against a life lived in poverty is a sound education. In today's world, more than ever, we need people who can think for themselves and this can only happen in a literate society. Give2Asia has listed this particular project as one of its programs in Greatest Need and has a fundraising goal of $28,000. The PEACE Fund's donation of $10,000 goes a long way towards helping it fulfill this goal.
