Latest news from the PEACE Fund

Taking up the bake sale challenge, Carmen McGilberry, found it’s a fun way to contribute.

Together with her sister, Nikki, Carmen enjoyed an evening of baking cookies. Then it was an early start at the Columbus Farmer’s Market but Carmen quickly organised her stall with cakes donated by Holmesburg Bakery of Philadelphia, Lil Debbies donated by Carmen and her mother and the cookies baked the night before.

Handing out PEACE leaflets and talking to people about the work funded quickly passed time until the 5 year old twins, Arianna and Leylah, and their mother arrived to help. The Twins drew their own “Helping Hands” on the Bake Sale sign, drawing lots of complimentary attention. They then took up their placards, shouting “Help Support The PEACE Fund!" gaining more attention and quite a few donations. As the end of the market neared, everything was packed away, but a couple of last minute contributions brought the total for the day to just under $100. All in all, it was a good day (beautiful weather, nice people), so Carmen is now looking forward to the next one.

Terry Fox Run in Budapest

The Terry Fox run is a 5k or 10k run, walk, skate or bike fund raiser for the Cancer Research Foundation in Hungary. These runs are held all around the world for Terry Fox, a Canadian, who attempted to run across Canada on an artificial leg (his leg had to be amputated after he was diagnosed with bone cancer). He called it the Marathon of Hope and wanted to raise awareness and money for cancer research in Canada.

He started the run in Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 and ran 43km a day (26 miles). On September 1, after 143 days (and 5,373 km/3,339 miles) he had to stop because the cancer had reappeared in his lungs. He died June 28, 1981, he was only 22.

Romantic Times Convention

Recently The PEACE Fund was approached by one of its volunteers who is a teacher to ask whether we would be willing to be put forward as one of a small group of nominated charities for her classroom's Penny Harvest fund drive.  This was an excellent fit with our latest education donation via Teachers Across Borders and the active involvement of children was another very positive factor.  Camille Oakie, our Volunteer Coordinator, was the key PEACE contact. Teachers Across Borders Teachers Across Borders

Early in the new year, Annie Christie flew to Denver to present a check for $10,000 to The PEACE Fund's newest recipients: Teachers Across Borders. "I was very impressed with the energy and passion of the people I met," said Annie. "What seemed to move them the most was actually seeing how much it meant to the Cambodian teachers to have these learning opportunities."

Ellise welcomes a bear at Christmas

Ellise and her bearPictured right is Ellise who gave a bear a lovely home for Christmas.

"Thank you so much for the gift. She was so excited when she received it. Of course I made her wait until Christmas to open it, which was probably a week or more. She could hardly stand the wait. She loves stuffed animals and she has a huge window seat full of them so the new bear fit right in.

Thanks again and I hope you had a wonderful holiday!"Sophia and her new friend

Thanks to the generosity of one of The PEACE Fund's anonymous supporters, some of the COTA children who have received support from The PEACE Fund also received an early Christmas gift - a bear made especially for them from the Vermont Teddy Bear Company.

Pictured here is Sophia, who now has a friend almost as big as she is!

Thank you for making Elijah's  Christmas bright this year and for caring about COTA children.

Attached  is a photo of Elijah holding the teddy bear.  Elijah is 2 years post transplant and is doing well so far.  I thank God for answering all my prayers.

THE PEACE FUND DONATES $10,000

Adrian came to London in February, during a break in fiming 'Nine Miles Down' to visit the HQ for The Relief Fund for Romania and to personally hand over the donation of $10,000 on behalf of The PEACE Fund.

"I think it is a worthy cause because their work affects children who are living in the saddest of conditions. Things don’t have to be this way and if this money helps in the slightest I am extremely proud to be a part of it and would like to express my thanks to all of those whose contributions made this donation possible " he said.
